Referee Volunteer

A hearty welcome to those of you considering volunteering as a Referee.

Every game needs 3 referees and, when counting parents with more than one kid, this requires 1 parent out of every 6 kids to help out every game. As a result, we need more referees than head coaches. Luckily, refereeing is easier to pick-up, less time consuming, and can be as rewarding.

We really need you!

If you haven’t refereed before, don’t worry. You do not need previous experience -- just a willingness to come out, get involved, and have some fun. You don’t even have to be an adult to volunteer. We have many siblings and former players that have joined our Youth Referee program. You only need to be 2 years older than the age group you wish to referee. We have referees of all different experience levels and a full roster of training and mentoring programs help new referees get started.

How to Get Started

1. Complete and Submit your eAYSO Volunteer Application form

Every volunteer (coach, referee, etc.) must create an eAYSO volunteer form, print it, sign it and turn it in. Go to https://www.eAYSO.org/ and use the First time button to enter your complete volunteer form. If you have never used this system before, make sure to create a login account.
Hand your completed form to a course instructor, your Referee Administrator, or mail them to:

San Carlos AYSO, P.O. Box 1462 San Carlos, CA 94070

This form is required every year to be covered by AYSO Accident and Liability Insurance and the US Volunteer Protection Act of 19997.

2. Complete a Referee Training Course

Safe Haven

Safe Haven™ is both a child and volunteer protection program. It was the first of its kind in youth sports. To ensure the safety of both children and volunteers, each volunteer is required to take a short online training session called Safe Haven™. It focuses on safety and appropriate behavior with children as well as first aid and other on-field issues. You only have to take Safe Haven certification once. But you must take it to become a referee or coach volunteer. Note that coach safe haven is different than referee safe haven. This one hour module for referees is simple and easy

To take the online safe haven course, you need to be a REGISTERED volunteer in eAYSO and have your AYSO ID in hand. To become registered, submit your eAYSO Volunteer Form listed in Step 1 above. Once your signed volunteer form is accepted, you will be registered in the eAYSO system. Doing so will allow you to see your AYSO ID when you log back in to eAYSO.org. You need to be registered AND have your AYSO ID in hand to utilize the online training site - http://www.aysotraining.org/

U-8 to Basic (U-10) Referee Upgrade Training:

This is for trained U8 Officials who are looking to UPGRADE to Basic (U-10) Referee Certification. To upgrade, you only need to attend Modules 8 through 13 of the Basic (U-10) Referee course. This is generally the last half of an all day course or starts the second night of a 3-consecutive night course.

The class begins with a brief review of the U-8 material as the Basic (U-10) Referee exam is comprehensive (as are all referee exams). Or you can simply sit through the U8 Official course as a refresher.
